Zitakula is equal parts high-energy funk and a hypnotic trip around the southern hemisphere. In 2013 multi-instrumentalist Mark Oomen brought together a band of eight, to play afrobeat and every groove remotely related.
Zitakula takes its cues from original masters like Fela Kuti, Ebo Taylor, and ethiojazz great Mulatu Astatke, as well as modern pioneers like EMEFE, Bixiga 70, and the Shaolin Afronauts, exploring the possibilities of a afrobeat eight-piece. The band is ready to claim a spot in the emerging Amsterdam afrobeat scene.
They set out in spring 2014 with a short self-titled EP and a summer filled with festival gigs. In the fall Zitakula reaped its first rewards when the band made it to the finals of the Amsterdam Pop Award in Paradiso and de Melkweg.
Since then, Zitakula has released the Fly & Scatter EP, and is already writing new material for an official debut set to be released in 2016. Meanwhile, they will be playing shows in the Netherlands and abroad. So check in often to see if the band will play at a place near you!
